October Observances

October is LGBTQ+ History Month. Here are some resources to promote awareness and acceptance in our classes, actions, knowledge, and curriculum. We recommend checking out GLSEN’s LGBTQ History Resource as well as Learning For Justice’s Queer in America Podcast.

In October, National Arts & Humanities Month encourages us to explore the beauty and culture around us. It’s the largest annual celebration of the arts and humanities in the United States, and there are festivities from coast to coast to honor NAHM. During October, we encourage you to reflect on the many ways arts and humanities contribute to our society. Can you imagine a world without music? A world without beautiful art, statues, literature, or culture? A world without the arts and humanities is a world lacking all of those things, and frankly, a world I wouldn’t want to live in.

Cybersecurity Awareness Month is designed to engage and educate public- and private-sector partners through events and initiatives with the goal of raising awareness about cybersecurity to increase the resiliency of the nation in the event of a cyber incident. Since the Presidential proclamation establishing Cybersecurity Awareness Month in 2004, the initiative has been formally recognized by Congress. This united effort is necessary to maintain a cyberspace that is safer and more resilient and remains a source of tremendous opportunity and growth for years to come.
